The Balti bowl is a cooking and serving pan for the Balti, a simple one pot method of high-heat, fast cooking using a mix of spices and vegetable oil. Here at Harper’s Hill we go the extra mile. Our bowls are pre-seasoned/coated with an oil based natural coating. This means you can use your bowl as soon as it arrives!
Description
Our bowl is based around the iconic Balti bowl developed back in the 70s when curry chefs started to make their dishes lighter, healthier and served faster to suit Western tastes. They commissioned the original pressed steel bowl from a pressings company based in Smethwick, just a stones throw from where Harper’s Hill are based.
What is a Balti bowl?
Using a combination of spices, off-bone meat or vegetables, cooked with vegetable oil rather than ghee, Balti is a fast cooking method where the dish is both cooked and served up in the specially designed Balti pan. The Balti bowl plays a key role in the emergence of what is now known globally as Birmingham’s own dish, and Harper’s Hill is part of that heritage of having been based in Birmingham and surrounding area for over 140 years.
Restaurant users and those of you with a true love of making your own curry will fall in love with our pressed steel Balti bowls. Our authentic bowls are pre-seasoned, and develop their true patina over time, offering the curry connoisseur the true essence of this iconic British/Pakistani tradition.
How we season our bowls
We brush the entire surface of the bowl, including the handles in a light vegetable or sunflower oil. They are then placed in our hot ovens where the oil sticks and coats the bowl. This is repeated until the bowl has the necessary non-stick coating, each bowl develops its own unique patina which will only enrich as it is used.
Where can our Balti bowls be used?
Our bowls are suitable for use on gas, electric and induction hobs, Aga cookers, and even barbecues!
Caring for your Harper’s Hill Balti Bowl
It is important that you wash your Balti bowl by hand, in warm water after every use using little or no soap. Wipe with a sponge to loosen food stuck to the bowl surface. Please remember that these bowls are made from steel and therefore should be thoroughly dried to avoid rusting.
If you plan on not using the bowls for an extended period of time, please ensure that they are seasoned properly before storage.
Giving something back.
The Harper’s Hill team want to share our journey, and hopefully success, by giving back to the West Midlands community by way of donating £1 to Acorns Children’s Hospice for every Balti Bowl sold.

Bought two balti bowls , ignored instructions after a few beers and dishwashed. They dried and rusted. Contacted Donna for any cleaning tips. She replied asking me to return them and they would replace FOC. Such an amazing gesture that I bought another two. Bowls are fantastic and look amazing sat in the wood. Thank you !!
Two balti pans ordered on Wednesday and delivered on Friday, beautifully presented. The following Tuesday I had the first Tandoori Chicken Tikka Balti and it was amazing. The pans are just the right size and create the best environment for Indian cooking. Easily enough for two in one bowl, but I ate the lot! The pre-seasoning meant the bowl wiped clean afterwards, dried and a touch more oil to keep the surface in top form and it’s good to go for next time. Tried the second dish the following night for a Jalfrezi and would you believe it, just as fantastic as the other bowl! A great addition to any kitchen that loves to make curries and a top quality product.
I purchased a Balti bowl gift set off these guys, the customer service was excellent quick and easy response via email.
As I am local to the area so even arranged to pick up from the factory.
Great packaging and presentation with the wooden stands etc.
I Used it for the first time last night with excellent results. A colleague of mine also purchased the same product and was over the moon.
I have already recommended the product to others and will continue do so.
Many thanks
Leigh.
As a Brummie, I have been into try to perfect the Birmingham Bali at home for some time. Although I have come very near to emulating this, I decided that what I needed was a traditional Balti bowl, and had found that Harpers hill sold just what I needed which was cheaper than the Birmingham balti bowl that I had seen advertized online so at about 4 oclock one afternoon I took the plunge and ordered my balti bowl from Harpers hill. You can imagine my surprise when just a couple of hours later a young lady came to the door carrying my purchase, to say that I was Gob smacked was an understatement, but it seems that by chance as she worked for Harper’s hill and lived in my locality, decided to drop it off on her way home. Now i know this is not the same for all customers but what a nice thought to even consider doing that. As regard the product it comes already seasoned and can be used right from the word go without having to go through the process of doing it yourself.,its made from pressed steel and is the same kind of bowl I am used to when visiting the many Balti restaurants of Birmingham. All that remains now is to fine tune my cooking of the balti and to thank Harper’s hill for going above and beyond.
I had been given a bowl by a gentleman – Jerry from Harpers Hill at an event at my work place here at BCU, Me and my wife will be making a nice curry tonight and we cant wait to have it in this perfectly made bowl. The workmanship and the fine detail on the bottom is a wonder and reminds me of my waitering days in Indian restaurants all over the UK back in the 90’s. A definite throwback to a masterful design. Thank you Jerry
